Hey it's the Thane of Glamis here, aka Macbeth. Yes, I know that I'm dead, but in retrospect, there's a lot I could have done to prevent my demise, one being marrying a different woman. Here in this blog (it's amazing the technology we get here in the afterlife) I plan to explore the relationship between a king and a tyrant. Humor me, will thee? It's the only relief I get from my Lady Macbeth.

Qualities of a King

In Macbeth, we get the sense that Duncan is a good king and that all his lords respect and honor him. When Macbeth becomes king, some of the lords respect him, but there is also Lennox, who suspects Macbeth of foul play in Duncan's death.

What would you say makes a king "good"? What makes a bad king? Also, is a bad king always a tyrannt?

I think that a good king genuinely cares for his people and does things that show it. I agree that Duncan was a good king. A bad king is selfish and demanding of his people. He only worries about himself and could care less about his people. Answering your tyrant question, a bad king could be one who is trying but can't seem to get anything done and is not really a tyrant, just unsuccessful.

A good king is a man of the people. A man that will always put his people first and try to help them all. Yet, a bad king is not always a tyrant. Yes, the ones who are evil and plotting are tyrants but perhaps some bad kings cannot rule well, for their people wont let them. They are not bad people, but the task they must do is near impossible or they are simply not fit to be a king.

A good king must be responsible because his possession of extreme power. He must take the well-being of all his subjects into account.

A bad king would abuse power or act irresponsibly. Being a bad king doesn't necessarily mean being a tyrant. His stupid actions could make him a bad king.

A "good" king listens to his people and does what's best for them. He cares for his people and his reasonable with his actions. A bad king is always up to something that is not what's best for his country and hides this. He would abuse his crown. A bad king could also be a man who just doesn't do anything and doesn't know what to do. A bad king doesn't always equal a tyrant.

A good king isn't always someone whom everyone likes and respects...sometimes it's someone who is willing to something untraditional for the better of his country. That's why, in some situations, kings aren't recognized at great kings until they are long gone; no one saw why they did certain things until they came into effect later. A bad king doesn't mean he's a tyrant...but a tyrant does make a bad king because a king shouldn't always look out for himself.

A good king is one that cares for the welfare of his people rather than himself. Whereas a bad king is one who is power hungry and cares only about his self advancement and not the betterment of his country.

I think a good king is someone who is respected and respects others. I think that a good king should also put his people first and always care for those people. I think that a bad king would be selfish and always looks out for himself but I don't think he would be a tyrant. I do think that Duncan was a good king.

I think that a good king would be someone who listens to the complaints of the people but can still maintain order. So basically, to be a good king you would need to obtain balance. A bad king would be someone who exploits the people, kills everyone, and makes everyone who is alive wish they were dead. I don't think that a bad king is always a tyrant because a tryrannt is someone who is seeking power and doesn't care how it affects the people but a bad king might just make poor decisions.

Well, first of all i think that a good king is a king of the people. One that is gracious and kind and listens whole heartedly to the voice of his people so as to make improvements to the kingdom. Also, a good king does not abuse the power that has been bestowed upon him. A bad king on the other hand, would do the opposite. He would most likely not listen to his people, abuse his power, or if he is lazy and does not utilize his power for good. A bad king is not always tryannical either. Usually tyrants throughout history, such as Joseph Stalin, are just paranoid because they are so obsessed with their power that they often kill their own people if they even suspect something fishy. Sorry that was kind of long but yeah thats my take on it.

I think that a good king always has main interest in the good of the people he rules. He is fair, but also sticks to the rules. I'd say that a bad king is unfair, and mistreats his people. No, I don't think that a bad king is always a tyrant; a bad king can also be lazy, uninterested with his country, and doesn't make an effort to improve anything that needs improving.
